ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP MARCH 15 FREE PICK

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH RAMS VS DAYTON FLYERS

The Atlantic 10 Tournament, being played at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn has been outstanding. The Championship Game features VCU and Dayton. VCU is playing in their 4th game in 4 days after dispatching Fordham, Richmond and blowing top seeds Davidson’s doors off by 20 in the semis. The Rams has had a new person lead the team to victory in each game of the tournament. Against Fordham Treveon Graham scored 22. Guard Melvin Johnson came off the bench against Richmond and lit The Spiders up for 23 including 5-9 from 3. Last Night against #1 seed Davidson, Graham went 4-4 from 3 and Sophomore Mo Alie-Cox poured in 18 as The Rams blew by Davidson racing to a 16 point first half lead and then trading them basket for basket in the 2nd half.  Dayton received the 1st round bye then slipped past St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island with a pair of 4 point wins. Dayton has been squeaking by on great coaching and sheer determination. Coach Archie Miller’s squad took St. Bonaventure’s best shot time and time again getting 26 points from forward Kendall Pollard who controlled the paint despite being Dayton’s tallest current player at 6’6. Then The Flyers played a low scoring, knock down drag out game against The Rams where every possession seemed like it would decide the game. The Flyers shot just 2 of 13 from 3 but turned Rhode Island over 21 times. Senior leader Jordan Sibert led the way with 12 points.

Prediction: Despite the championship game being its 4th game in 4 days The Rams are more than equipped to deal with it. They have a very deep bench shuffling guys in and out and playing outstanding full court pressure defense. Dayton on the other hand are down to just 6 scholarship players (and they only play 6 players) due to suspensions and injuries. Their 3rd game in 3 days will effect them much more than The Rams as their starters  played an avg of 37 minutes on back to back nights. The game yesterday against Rhode Island they were noticeable tired and basically willing themselves to victory. Miller will make sure Dayton will come out swinging and make it a game early but VCU’s pressure defense will wear them down and The Rams will run the break every chance they get to tire out Dayton even more. Both of these teams are going to The Tournament but VCU will get the automatic bid by outscoring Dayton in the 2nd half and winning The A 10 Tournament. THE PICK VCU -1
