WEDNESDAY MARCH 4 FREE NHL PICK

OTTAWA SENATORS @ WINNIPEG JETS

The Ottawa Senators playoff hopes looked dead 3 weeks ago. It’s still a long shot but they reeled off 5 straight wins after calling up goalie Andrew Hammond from Binghamton. A 3-2 shootout loss at Minnesota Tuesday night stopped the streak. That streak included beating Eastern Conference leaders Montreal, shutting out the Western Conference’s best team Anaheim and then shutting out L.A. the very next night to end the Kings 8 game winning streak.  The Winnepeg Jets are currently 5th in the Western Conference. That’s not as comfortable as it sounds as the 5 teams behind them are all within 5 points. The Jets are 4-4 in their last 8 but have fared much better at home going 5-1 in their last 6. During Those 5 games the Jets have scored 22 goals led by their top line of Brian Little, Andrew Ladd, and Blake Wheeler. Expect a very good game between 2 teams fighting for their playoff lives.

Prediction: The Winnipeg Jets have been scoring in bunches but also allowing the opponent to score almost as many. The only reason the Jets are currently in playoff position is because the offense has played very well. The defense has been shaky all year. In their last 38 games the OVER has cashed 26 times and that doesn’t include 4 PUSHES. For Ottawa, Hammond has been outstanding but the defense is naturally starting to get fatigued on this road trip. This will be their 5th game and 2nd back to back on this 8 day trip through California, Minnesota and now Winnipeg. Before Hammond shut the Kings out 1-0, Ottawa had given up an average of 4 goals in the 2nd game of back to backs. These 2 teams are going to light up the scoreboard. Expect a 5-4 type game.               THE PICK: OVER 5
