Week 5 Thursday College Football Betting Preview

Thursday October 1st 7:30pm

Miami 3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS, O/U 2-1. Cincinnati 2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS, O/U 4-0.

The Miami Hurricanes travel to Cincinnati to take on The Bearcats for their first game in 12 days. They last played September 19th overcoming a furious comeback by Nebraska at home winning 36-33 in overtime as 3.5 point favorites. The Bearcats played last Thursday night against Memphis, going back and forth in an exciting shootout that Memphis won in the final minute 53-46. Cincinnati covered the spread as 8 point dogs.

Miami comes in with a balanced offensive attack with playmakers all over the field. The Canes came started the season with question marks on the offensive line after losing 4 starters including 2 all ACC players. After running roughshod over two cream puff opponents they got their first real test against Nebraska and the offensive line didn’t play great but they still averaged over 4 yards a carry with starting running back Joseph Yearby getting 125 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. With Nebraska trying to stop the run QB Brad Kaaya had a good game throwing for 357 yards. Cincinnati’s secondary was torched last week against Memphis giving up 412 yards passing. Look for Cincinnati to still attempt to stop the run and hope their secondary play can improve. Miami has 2 good weapons on the outside with Rashawn Watts and Herb Waters combining for 450 yards in 3 games. So if The Bearcats stack the box and leave their corners 1 on 1 they may give up another 50. Miami’s defense looked fantastic for 3 quarters last game before falling apart in the 4th quarter giving up 3 long touchdown drives in the 4th quarter against Nebraska. We look for Miami to learn from that and play with greater urgency for all 4 quarters.

Cincinnati is still looking for an identity this season as they have been up and down through 4 games. There last 3 games have been decided by 8 points or less and they are a few plays away from being at least 3-1. As they play at home for the first time this season they are turning to a new quarterback as junior starter Gunner Kiel was carted off the field with a neck injury last week. They will turn to redshirt freshman Hayden Moore who entered the game last week and broke the school passing yards record throwing for 557 yards 4 touchdowns and 2 picks against Memphis. Miami will be without starting safeties Deon Bush and Jamal Carter for the first half as both were ejected last game for targeting. Look for Cincinnati to try and slow the pace down this week with their 2 headed running back attack of Tion Green and Hosey Williams who have combined for almost 600 yards through 4 games.

Look for Miami to try and play uptempo and make it a track meet as they have the superior athletes and Cincinnati will do their best to slow the game down. The Bearcats will have to limit mistakes in this game if they want to keep it close. As tempting as it is to turn the kid loose after throwing for that many yards last week and 2 safeties out for a half, remember Memphis had hardly no tape on him. Miami has had a full week to prepare for the young quarterback. In the end Miami has the second most takeaways in FBS this season and Cincinnati has the 2nd most giveaways in FBS. Combine that with a redshirt freshman starting QB and we’re taking Miami and the OVER. THE PICK Miami -6.5, OVER 68.5
