Hawaii -1 O/U 64.5

Hawaii 2016 7-7 SU 6-8 ATS

Umass 2016 2-10 SU 7-5 ATS

Football junkies and bettors alike are extremely excited to get this season going. Well wait no more. College Football is kicking off early this season with 4 games slated for August 26th. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and the Massachusetts Minutemen will play for the second consecutive season following their game in Hawaii to end last year’s regular season. Hawaii needed that game to become eligible and they got it, winning 46-40. Hawaii failed to cover the 9 point spread and the total went over 57.

Umass’ first season in FBS was in 2012 when they joined the MAC. They haven’t fared very well going 10-53 in their 5 seasons. Last season was their first as an independent and it seemed as if they regressed even more. Part of the reason is their inability to find defensive players with enough skill to compete at the Division 1 level. Compounding the problem is the turnover of their defensive staff. Firing and hiring new defensive coaches every season is not the way to do things. Umass’ offense has not fared much better. Last season they scored 21 points or under 5 times and their returning talent led by Virginia Tech transfer QB Andrew Ford is average at best. On the other side Hawaii’s defense is perennially mediocre but they make up for it with a high flying passing attack built to score a lot of points. Quarterback Dru Brown returns with most of his weapons in place and a veteran offensive line. Umass will be able to score some points on Hawaii’s defense but look for Hawaii to win in another shootout going away and covering the spread. THE PICK – Hawaii Rainbow Warriors -1
