BYU vs NEBRASKA (-7) O/U 64.5

September 5th 3:30pm

Nebraska has a tough opening game as BYU travels to Lincoln. New Nebraska head coach Mike Riley comes over from Oregon St. and is going to apply a more pro style offense with a bigger emphasis on the passing game. Dual threat quarterback Tommy Armstrong is coming of a nice season where he combined for 3,400 and 28 scores. This first game is going to showcase his skills as Riley envisions him being a Russell Wilson type. They are replacing outstanding running back Ameer Abdullah with a trio of capable backs led by senior Imani Cross. The wide receiver position is stocked with 2 returning starters Jordan Westerkamp and Alonzo Moore. New defensive coordinator Mark Banker inherits a defensive secondary that is mostly intact from a 2014 where it ranked 4th nationally in pass efficiency. They should be better this year against the run though returning a ton of upperclassman up front, most notably Greg McMullen, Maliek Collins and Vincent Valentine who combined for 100 tackles and 12 sacks. They have to be better in week 1 or BYU will run them into the ground. They return fantastic junior safety Nate Gerry who had 69 tackles last season and 5 picks and will be the leader on the back end as well as come up and spy Taysom Hill.

BYU welcomes back exciting senior QB Taysom Hill who many believe could be in The Heisman Trophy conversation. He has weapons all over the field and many of those weapons are seniors. The combination of Hill and RB Jamaal Williams should give The Nebraska fans an early opportunity to see if they will be better stopping the run in 2015. They won’t have much luck though as BYU will be able to move the ball on the ground most of the day. Hill doesn’t have a great arm but he will hit enough throws to wide receiver Mitch Mathews and H back Mitchell Juergens to keep The Husker defensive on their heels. BYU was one of the best teams in the nation a year ago against the run and returns all 4 starters on their defensive of line this season. Last season teams knew the best way to move the ball on BYU was to pass and The Cougars will also have problems against the pass in this game. They only return one starter in the secondary and Tommy Armstrong should have a lot of success running around and finding open receivers.

In the end we like Nebraska to use the home field advantage and score enough points to pull off the win but BYU will cover the 7. THE PICK: BYU +7, OVER 64.5
