Last week the Detroit Lions had the best bye week any NFL team could hope for. Sitting at home at 5-4 they watched their 3 NFC North rivals go on the road and all lose. Minnesota lost their 4th straight and Green Bay and Chicago both were absolutely Bludgeoned. Now they sit tied for first place and host the last place team from the AFC South the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The biggest question in this matchup is, How good are the Detroit Lions? The Jaguars stink and we all know it but at 5-4 are the Lions any good? Well the combined record of the Lions 5 wins is 23-21-1 with their most impressive win against the Washington Redskins. Their opponents combined record in their 4 losses is 17-20. Just looking at the record of the teams they’ve beat and the teams they’ve lost to you realize they might be a middle of the road the team with a good quarterback. Mathew Stafford is having a very good season but it’s not mind blowing. He is 5th in the NFL in Completion percentage, 8th in touchdowns, 11th in yards per attempt and 15th in total yards. He is right were he always has been, not an elite QB but very good at times. So what about the running game? Well one word….. Awful. The Lions are 27th in the NFL in rushing yards and 23rd in yards per attempt. Stafford is their 2nd leading rusher with 122 yards. Well what about the defense? The Lions rank 20th in total yards, 18th against the pass and 17th against the run. Scoring defense they are right in the middle tied for 15th.

To say Detroit is a middle of the road team is an understatement. This team is by no way good yet. They may get there but they aren’t there yet. The way to attack the Jags is on the ground not through the air and Detroit is just not built that way (Jacksonville’s defense is 3rd against the pass) Look for the Lions to get off to slow start following the bye week and allow Jacksonville to hang around all game. Jacksonville has an excellent chance to pick up their 3rd win here but we’ll take those 6.5 points with a smile. The Pick Jacksonville +6.5
