Well that went fast. It seemed like just yesterday when we woke up on September 8th and looked forward to a new NFL season. After 266 games and 30 teams and their fan bases have already had their season end only 2 remain. To the chagrin of many the New England Patriots are back for the 7th time in the 16 year marriage of Bill Belichik and Tom Brady. The Atlanta Falcons will be on the other sideline playing in the Super Bowl for the first time since their 34-19 loss to the Denver Broncos 18 years ago. The New England Patriots will be going for their 5th trophy and Atlanta is looking for their first. Lets look at how both teams got here.

New England

The New England Patriots started the season 3-1 straight up and ATS while the golden boy served his 4 game suspension for a scandal (perceived or not) that no one wants to talk about anymore. Once Brady came back he was once again lights out, going 13-1 straight up and 12-2 ATS while throwing for over 3,500 yards, 28 TD’s and only 2 interceptions. The Patriots were 9 point dogs in Week 1 at Arizona and won 23-21 straight up. After that game Vegas learned their lesson and the Pats were favored in every game the rest of the year. Their only loss with Brady under center was a 31-24 loss at home to Seattle as 7.5 point favorites. Their only other ATS loss was a 22-17 win against the Jets as 9.5 point favorites. No team has come within 10 points of them since a 30-23 win against Baltimore at home on December 12th. The Pats averaged 32 points a game during the 14 games Brady was under center. That only led to a 7-7 totals record due to them having the #1 scoring defense in the NFL last season.

Atlanta Falcons

No one thought that the Falcons had any chance to be here after they suffered their 2nd consecutive heart breaking defeat, 33-30 at home to San Diego on October 23rd to drop them to 4-3 on the year. Atlanta started off the season slow losing 31-24 at home to the Bucs. They then rattled off 4 straight up and ATS wins in a row before their 2 game losing streak to Seattle and San Diego. After that game Matt Ryan caught fire leading the Falcons to wins in 9 of their next 11 games, covering in 7 of them. During that time Ryan threw for 22 touchdowns and only 3 picks. Atlanta’s offense had no equal this season. They were the only team that averaged over 30 points a game and scored 71 more points than 2nd place New Orleans. The Falcons scored over 30 points 13 times and over 40 points 5 times. They only scored under 20 points once this season when they only managed 15 in their 1 really bad game November 13th at Philadelphia. That was also the last time an Atlanta game went UNDER.
