Eastern Michigan has been involved in a pair of high-scoring shootouts totalling 76 and 70 points but I look for a different story to unfold in Tempe on Saturday. The Eagles know they can ill afford to trade scores with a superior Arizona State squad here. While they’ve allowed a whopping 83 points through two games, it is worth noting that they’ve performed well defensively for stretches. Eastern Michigan didn’t allow an offensive touchdown until there were less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter against Eastern Kentucky in its season-opening win. Last week, the Eagles actually shut out a powerful Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns offense for the entire first half before coming unglued in the game’s final 30 minutes. I’m not convinced Arizona State is as well-positioned to take advantage of Eastern Michigan’s defensive flaws as for instance Louisiana was last week. The Sun Devils didn’t reach the end zone until nearly three minutes into the third quarter against Oklahoma State this past Saturday. Even in their opener against FCS squad Northern Arizona it wasn’t until almost halfway through the second quarter that they put a touchdown on the board. In that same game, Arizona State scored a touchdown just shy of three minutes into the third quarter but then were held out of the end zone the rest of the way. With a big home showdown against Utah looming next week, this is a ‘win and move on’ type of spot for the Sun Devils and I believe the total will prove too high. Take the under.
