College Football Betting Guide For The Novice Bettor

College Football is arguably the hardest sport to master. The player turnover, amount of teams, discrepancy in talent and high point spreads/totals can make a novice bettors head spin. Before you go down that long, hard path of trying to win betting college football you need to know the basics. The three most popular bets placed on a College Football game is betting on the point spread, total and money line.

Point Spread

Betting the point spread is the most common way to place a College Football bet.. The point spread is used to even the playing field and attempt to get an equal number of bets on both sides. Let’s use a hypothetical game to explain this further. In this scenario, The Florida St Seminoles are the favorite and the Louisville Cardinals are the underdogs. The minus sign always means the favorite and the plus sign always means the underdog. So when you see Florida St -13 that means The Seminoles are favored to win the game by 13 points. If you bet on Florida St they have to win by 14 or more points for you to win the game. If you bet on the Louisville you would win the bet if the Cardinals either win the game or lose the game by 12 or less points. If FSU wins by exactly 13 points it’s known as a push which means all sides get their money back. The payoff or loss on the bet depends on the odds. The most common odds for a College Football game would be -110. Which means you have to risk $110 to win $100.

Total

Betting on the College Football total (also known as Over/Under) is betting on the total number of points scored by both teams. College totals are not like the NFL’s which are usually set below 50 points. In College you could see totals anywhere between 37 and 80. You will come across totals under 37 and over 80 but not often. If the total is set at 63 points that means you can either bet the “Over” which means the 2 teams would have to score 64 or more points to win the game or you can bet the “Under” which means the two teams would have to score 62 points or under to win. If they score exactly 63 points it means it’s a push and all bets are returned.

Money Line

The oddsmakers also allow you to bet on which team you think will win the game outright. In the below scenario we have a game pitting the USC Trojans vs the UCLA Bruins. The oddsmakers have made USC the favorite and listed them at -200. They have listed UCLA the underdog and listed them at +180. All that means is you have to bet $200 to win $100 on the Trojans and you only have to bet $100 to $180 on the Bruins. There are no ties in College Football so there must be a winner.
