MLB Betting Guide For The Novice Bettor

There are many people out there that are afraid to bet on baseball for one reason or another. We decided to give you the basics so that you can at least understand how the betting works. The three most popular bets placed on an MLB game is betting on the Money Line,, Total and Point Spread (Also known as the run line)

Money Line

The money line is by far the most popular way people bet on baseball and it’s pretty straightforward. In this hypothetical game between the NY Mets and Atlanta Braves the Mets are the favorites and listed -175 and the Braves are the underdogs listed at +158. All this means is you would have to risk $175 to win $100 on the Mets and you only have to bet $100 to win $158 on the Braves. The reason why many baseball fans are afraid to bet is there can be some very high money lines. If a team has one of the best pitchers in baseball on the mound you may have to bet over $200 to win $100. That risk is too high for most people. On the flip side many people love it because even the worst team in baseball wins over 60 games a year and that team usually gets odds of +150 and higher so the reward is great.

Total

Betting on the MLB total (also known as the Over/Under) is betting on the total number of runs scored by both teams. MLB totals are usually between 7 and 11 runs. You will come across totals under 7 and over 11 but not often. If the total is 8 runs that means you can either bet the “Over” which means the two teams have to score 9 runs or more to win. A bet on the “Under” means the two teams have to combine for 7 runs or less to win. If the score ends with a total of 8 runs it means a push and all bets are returned.

Point Spread

The Point Spread (also known as the run line) in baseball is a little different than in football or basketball. In baseball the run line is always set at 1.5. The team that has the minus sign in front of the 1.5 is the favorite. The team the plus sign in front of the 1.5 is the underdog. In this hypothetical game we are using the NY Yankees as the favorite and the Toronto Blue Jays as the underdog. The line will look like this, NY Yankees -1.5 (-175) Toronto Blue Jays +1.5 (+150) This means you have to bet $175 to win $100 on the Yankees winning by 2 runs or more. You only have to bet $150 on the Blue Jays to win the game or lose by 1.
